Stops
Toplou Monastery · 60 minutes
15th-century fortress-monastery; icon museum; organic wine and olive oil tasting from the monastery's estate.
Itanos archaeological site · 60 minutes
Hellenistic harbor ruins on a deserted twin-bay headland. Amphora shards, column drums, wall foundations.
Vai Beach · 2 hours 30 minutes
Europe's largest natural palm forest. Swim, lunch at the beach taverna.
Sitia town · 60 minutes
Coffee stop at the harbor; optional visit to the archaeological museum or Kazantzakis statue.
Of note: Toplou held 70 monks and withstood pirate sieges; its walls are 10 meters high and 1 meter thick. Itanos was a major Hellenistic port-city; legend says it was founded by the Phoenicians. Vai's palms (Phoenix theophrasti) are native to Crete and protected — this is the densest natural grove remaining.
